PhD Research

Arsalan’s Ph.D. thesis is titled « Machine learning for capture and modeling of the visual appearance of surfaces ».

Background

Arsalan Khawaja is currently a joint PhD Student at NTNU, Norway, and the University of Burgundy, France. His past experience includes intern researcher at the Endoscopy and Computer Vision (EnCoV) Research Group at Clermont-Ferrand, France, and as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. His area of interest is Interactive Machine Learning, Image registration, Reflectance Transformation Imaging, and Control theory. Currently, he is working on developing Optimization Algorithms for Reflectance Transformation Imaging.

He is mainly working on Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). RTI is an emerging research field and it is a meticulous procedure from acquisition to visualization. His research is focused on improving RTI acquisition and visualization methods using Artificial Intelligence.

Applications

RTI images have several applications. Some of them are industrial equipment inspection, cultural heritage preservation, crime investigation, and dermatology.
