Project description

Among cardiovascular diseases, a swelling of the aorta called an aortic aneurysm represents a significant risk of death caused by a tear of the aortic wall or aneurysm rupture. The surgical decision to replace the aorta with a Dacron tube is mainly based on the size of the aneurysm (> 50-55 mm). However, it is known that aneurysm rupture of the ascending aorta occurs in more than 66% of cases for aneurysms with a size smaller than 55 mm. Therefore, it seems decisive to acquire a better understanding of this phenomena. The work carried out by our team on 4D (3D+t) segmentation on MRI (anatomical information) is promising. The next objective is to obtain a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of aortic blood flow from the 4D segmentation and 4D flow MRI data (functional information). The blood circulation of the entire circulatory system can be reproduced by means of lumped elements: resistances, compliances, impedances, and diodes. The lumped-parameter model for hemodynamic simulation of the aorta needs to be initialised and optimised according to the flow data derived from 4D flow MRI. In particular, the model parameters can be initialised and optimised according to the blood flow velocities computed on specific cross-sections of the aorta. The goal of this work is to generate patient specific CFD simulations thanks to the anatomical and functional information of each patient. All the simulations will be performed with the Fluent software (ANSYS company), collaborator of this project and the student will have access to a database of more than 40 patients with 4D MRI exams.

The student will be located in the “Imagerie et Vision Artificielle" (ImViA) in Dijon, France and will work in close relation with the medical team of the University Hospital François Mitterrand in Dijon, France. This work is part of a more global project led by Olivier Bouchot MD-PhD, and could lead to a PhD on a similar topic.
